heart Our Umameo treats are easily made by mixing 250g of the protein powder pack with 2 tbsp tahini paste gently heated in 150ml’s of your favourite milk-alternative such as oat, soya, or almond milk. Roll the dough into any shapes you like keeping some powder to coat the table surface and prevent sticking if moulding or if you have no time, lay the dough out flat in the oven and cut into small squares while still warm.

Bake in the oven at 180C for 20 minutes and for a dryer treat, leave in the oven at a very low temperature for a few hours – couldn’t be easier and it couldn’t be healthier for your pet!

Please note that our protein powders are high in Omega 6 and Omega 3’s and with no artificial additives, the treats should be kept refrigerated once baked (preferably in a familiar crinkly container that your dog reacts to) for up to 7 days to maintain the freshness of the Omegas.

Sustainablility

Every one of the ingredients in our homemade treats are chosen to not only be kind to our pets but also to our planet. We have chosen not to use rice as a protein source as rice is actually not a contributor to a healthier climate. It has a high carbon footprint as can only be imported from India or China.

We initially used hemp protein and ground almonds in our ingredients but both of these could only be sourced from China or the USA and we were not happy with this very high carbon footprint. We then sourced organic amaranth from Austria, organic sweet lupine from Germany, best quality marine phytoplankton from the Netherlands, organic oatbran from Scotland and organic ground sunflower seeds from Estonia. We feel these offer kinder shorter carbon footprints while still offering the quality we were after for your plant-based pets.

All our packaging is chosen as it is fully biodegradable and compostable (made from wood pulp), and we have chosen DPD for our heavier parcel deliveries as although slightly more expensive; they offer a carbon neutral delivery service as shown on your delivery label.

Everything is kind to both your pet and our fragile planet!

Nutrient Comparison

We urge you to compare the nutrient value of the ingredients that we have chosen for our treats to the top hypoallergenic treats being sold at veterinary practices throughout the UK – Hills Hypoallergenic Treats in their plastic packaging – there really is no comparison!

WHY THE PDSA CHARITY?
Find out more......

As a GP vet, I have worked at the PDSA charity for the last few years and I have always chosen to work between christmas and new year as it is the time of the year that elderly people are so alone and the only people they talk to when everyone is busy with family, is their vet! I have had a number of elderly men who live alone who would come in with very minor concerns about their pets – maybe just a nail clip, but always so desperate to just talk – especially about their most loyal companion.

I am concentrating on supporting Just be Kind this year and it is the first year that I will not be consulting and I do not even want to think of how lonely our elderly self-isolating owners are with the current pandemic. I SO admire all the vets still working under such difficult circumstances and every one of them deserves as much support and praise as we can give.

This is why £2.50 of every pack sold will go to the PDSA, so thank you.

We want to continue this new healthy and tasty habit so we can have him as long as we can – he is already 8 so hopefully eating more healthy food will help stay fit for longer!”

Another good investment in the health of your dog is to buy a dehydrator to make healthy snacks.

Simply add chopped pears, apples, peaches, beetroot, chickpeas, edamame beans, kiwi etc to the dehydrator and leave overnight to dry – couldn’t be easier or healthier!

The healthy treats below use ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen cupboard for a quick and easy snack that your dog will love (and maybe you will too!)

Sweet potato treats

Ingredients

• 2 sweet potatoes

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 150C. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Use a knife to cut the sweet potato into slices peeled before use (as the skin contains solanine). Slice into coin sized-pieces if your dog is small, but if you have a bigger dog you could slice them lengthwise for larger chews. You don’t want the pieces to be too thin, or they will just get crispy and not chewy, so make sure they are no thinner than 1/2cm. Arrange them in a single layer on the baking sheets and bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours flipping once half way through until they are shrunken, dried out, and some pieces are a bit crispy, while others are a bit chewy. Let cool, then store in an air-tight container in the fridge for about 3 weeks.

Alternately place them in the dehydrator overnight instead of the oven.

Chickpea blend

Remembering that dogs respond to the smell of protein and amino acids in foods, these treats are protein packed –

Blend a tin of drained chickpeas with oats and pure peanut butter. Roll into little treat balls. These can be fed as they are or cooked.

Oat and peanut butter biscuits

Mix peanut butter, mashed banana or applesauce, oat flour, and water.

Proportions are flexible as long as you add enough flour to make a stiff dough.

1 part peanut butter, 1 part water, 1/2 part banana or applesauce, and then oat flour until the dough is stiff enough to roll out.

You can cut these into dog shapes of your choice or just in squares – your dogs won’t mind!
