Keeping a balance is always beneficial to ensure that your dog receives the full complement of nutrients so vary the food fed with the homemade diet. We have reviewed the more popular commercial plant-based brands currently available in the UK so you can see exactly what is in each one and where to purchase.

The wheat free Benevo does NOT have the addition of taurine and l-carnitine for heart health; and all the Benevo products do not have additional Vit D3 or methionine for urinary tract health. We therefore advise complementing the feeding of Benevo with a homecooked diet made with the addition of the Vegdog supplement, and carefully balanced by our vet nutritionists for your dog.

We love everything about Hownd’s tinned 100% plant-based food that started being sold in February 2021 and took 2 years to develop. It has the addition of l-Carnitine and Taurine that is lacking in Lily’s Kitchen Rainbow Stew, and we are very happy with the superfood ingredients that have been included in the food. Always happy to support British businesses not associated with the large pet food manufacturers, so highly recommend.

Lily’s Kitchen Rainbow Stew arrived on the market in autumn 2020 to keep up with the demand for a UK plant-based and nutritious product and we applaud this big company for moving with the times. It does not contain taurine and l-carnitine for heart health, added plant-based Vit D3, or added methionine for urinary tract health, so it cannot be fed exclusively, but is ideal for meat-free Mondays or in addition to feeding a dry food that contains all these additional requirements such as found in Solo-Vegetal dry food.

Analytical Constituents:

Yarrah Organic wheat-free dry food is readily available in the UK and contains nourishing ingredients although it is not ideal for dogs that are allergic to corn or soya as these are its main ingredients. It does contain taurine and l-carnitine for heart health, but its Vit D source is from sheep wool fat rather than from the pure plant-based source in the other foods we recommend. All the Yarrah products DO NOT have additional methionine for urinary tract health. We therefore advise complementing the feeding of Yarrah dry with a homecooked diet made with the addition of the Vegdog supplement, and carefully balanced by our vet nutritionists for your dog.

Ami is another very popular brand as reasonably priced. It comes from Italy and its protein source is corn and rice so not good for dogs with an intolerance to corn. It does not contain taurine for heart health, added plant-based Vit D3, or added methionine for urinary tract health, so it cannot be fed exclusively. We therefore advise complementing the feeding of Ami with a homecooked diet made with the addition of the Vegdog supplement, and carefully balanced by our vet nutritionists for your dog.

V-Dog Crunchy Nuggetsv-dog crunchy nuggets

V-Complete are a popular company based in the UK and reasonably priced. Our only concern with their product, is that the Vit D3 source is from the artificial Calcitriol Glycoside. When it is added to animal feed, the workers at the plant have to wear facemasks as it is such a toxic product. This does concern us that it is used in V-Complete instead of the more natural plant-based Vit D3 products as found in the other plant-based products below. It also does not have the addition of methionine for urinary tract health.

Solo Vegetalsolo vegetal

Only plant-based food sold by vet practices in the UK as marketed for dogs with protein allergies – it contains premium ingredients and is very palatable with round biscuits. It contains the required amount of taurine and l-carnitine for heart health, Vit D3 from natural plant-based sources; and the addition of methionine for urinary tract health, so can be fed exclusively to your dog without the addition of a homemade supplemented diet. THE MOST EXPENSIVE BUT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Veggiedog contains very good ingredients as it is corn, soya and wheat free. It is vegetarian as the Vit D3 source is from sheep wool fat of sheared sheep and the company is not 100% plant-based, but there is no addition of taurine for heart health, or methionine for urinary tract health, so cannot be fed exclusively. If fed, your dog would need to be supplemented with a homecooked diet using Vegdog supplement for the additional requirements.
