All dogs on a plant-based diet need the addition of the amino acid Taurine in their diet. They are able to make Taurine in their bodies from one of the essential amino acids Methionine, but this sulphur amino acid is usually found in meat and animal products so needs to be supplemented in dogs eating a 100% plant-based diet.
Taurine is required particularly for heart health, along with enough Vit B and Omega 3 fatty acids to enhance its absorption. 2% of dogs, and in particular those with deep chests and giant breeds, can suffer with a genetic condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) which results in the heart muscle becoming weak and ineffective.
These dogs require an even higher level of Taurine to keep their heart muscle healthy.
It was thought that a high legume or meat-based grain free diet was the cause of DCM in dogs, but due to lack of enough evidence and the knowledge that the diets just need that extra addition of Taurine for susceptible dogs; their diet has no longer been seen as the cause as shown here. πππΎπ±
